Ever thought a ballet could be performed by five musicians? Neither did we, until Sam came out with his newest arrangement of Igor Stravinsky's Petrouchka! Originally a full scale ballet about a hand-puppet’s fatal infatuation for his ballerina counterpart, Petrouchka was a pivotal piece that brought Stravinsky immense acclaim in the highly critical arts scene of 1911 Paris. A prolific arranger himself, Stravinsky often transcribed his own works, including Petrouchka.

We are now in the process of developing a new, modernized chamber ballet version of Petrouchka, combining Sam’s imaginative arrangement with a small cast of dancers. The new choreography will let us bring this timeless musical story to schools and audiences all over the country—starting in Philadelphia. Thanks to a generous grant from the Curtis Institute of Music, we will be premiering the new chamber ballet in Philadelphia next season!
