Educational Residencies
ensemble132 is deeply committed to guiding the next generation of musicians through educational residencies at universities and music schools. With experience offering masterclasses and residencies at esteemed institutions such as Texas Christian University, Queens College, and the Marlboro Music Festival, e132 artists bring a wealth of knowledge and a passion for mentorship. Our residencies go beyond traditional pedagogy, offering not only masterclasses and coachings but also providing custom-designed programs that cater to the unique needs of each institution and its students.
Each of our artists brings a holistic perspective to their work—acting as performers, curators, arrangers, entrepreneurs, and collaborators—and these residencies focus on sharing that perspective with students as they prepare to enter the professional world. Although every residency is different, our goal is always to create a dynamic and exploratory learning environment that enriches students and engages the broader arts community, fostering a deeper appreciation for chamber music and offering valuable insights into the ever-evolving world of classical music.
Experiences that we offer as part of educational residencies may include:
Chamber Music / Solo Masterclasses:
ensemble132 members conduct masterclasses for students, providing them with the opportunity to learn from and interact with musical artists at the top of their field.
Chamber Music Concerts:
Public concert(s) of an ensemble132 program featuring original arrangements, chamber music standards, and sonatas/duos.
Open Rehearsals:
An open rehearsal for each concert, allowing students and the community to gain insights into the process and preparation for a public performance.
Mixed Group Performances:
During the residency week, ensemble132 members rehearse and perform with student groups (1–3 students joining e132 musicians per piece), providing a uniquely collaborative and educational experience for students.
Career Seminars:
ensemble132 members conduct seminar(s) addressing topics such as self-management and business execution, curatorial innovation, and social entrepreneurship in the music industry.
Arrangement Workshops:
Co-Artistic Director Sam Hong leads workshop(s) with e132 members exploring the creative and interpretive process of arrangement—giving a piece new life by reconstructing it for a new setting and instrumentation. These can be offered to the school’s wider community (read more here) or as a more in-depth seminar with performance and composition students.
Composition and Performance Practice Workshops:
ensemble132 members lead seminar(s) exploring performance practice as a tool to better understand the musical idioms and historical context of a given musical work. These include helping composers and collaborating performance students to workshop new pieces, as well as examining the stylistic and historical elements of music from the Renaissance to the 21st Century.
